hat's one of the most common questions I'm asked by aspiring and professional writers alike. And it's an excellent question since most writers today receive absolutely no compensation for their craft.

So how do I earn money as a writer? Let me count the ways.

Well, at least four of them.

1. Sell Valuable Information

About 15 years ago, my brother and business partner, James and I published an information guide which listed all of the U.S. Army contracts for rebuilding Iran after the Persian Gulf War in the early '90s. For example, civil engineers were being offered $300,000 for an annual contract. I am tired of all the claims of EASY money being made on the internet. Let me clarify something from the very beginning - nothing is easy. How to Advertise Your Website on a Budget

When you are starting out in a new home business and no one knows who you are, one of the greatest challenges you will face is how to drum up new business.

If there were not people in your community or marketplace that you knew who needed your products or services, you probably would not have started your business to begin with. But, once you have talked to those who you personally knew who needed your what you offer, then your next task is to find others who will help keep your doors open.

Many people know that they must turn to advertising at some point in the future, but they hope that day will be long down the road. For some, this utopian concept will come to fruition. But for the rest of us in the real world, we must come up with creative solutions for meeting our home business advertising needs while working within our budget.

Most people have a misconception about having to spend lots of money in order to advertise their home business. When you start out, you honestly will not have much money available for advertising, and if you do, you should still spend it wisely.

Before you jump headfirst into the world of advertising, let me share some of the lessons I have learned concerning this most important topic.

LESSON 1

It does not have to cost an arm and a leg to advertise your home business, unless you fail to plan and fail to test.

As much as is possible, you should always test your advertising. If you jump in and start dumping tons of money in to advertising without first testing your advertising, you might find yourself broke and without sales at the end of the road. Most people who commit this error write off their failure on the home business they chose or the economy or any of a hundred other excuses. But, if they are unwilling to take responsibility for their mistake, they will never learn from their mistake. Don't let this be you.

LESSON 2

All testing should be done in blocks. If you begin to advertise simultaneously in newspapers, radio and television, how will you know which advertising is bringing people to your cash register? You won't. All you will know that something might be working, but you will not know what is actually doing the trick.

Even if you tell people in your advertising to tell you how they found you, my experience shows that fewer than 10% of the people ever will tell you anything --- and those people who do may not even get the facts straight! You cannot rely on your customers to tell you what advertising is working for your home business. You must put in the extra effort to know for yourself.

LESSON 3

Only when you have a proven and solid advertising portfolio should you venture to drop big bucks in an advertising campaign. Even then, you should be careful to keep further measurements to determine how much the maximum advantage of an ad would be. Sometimes you might be able to reach ten times as many people, but depending on the kind of media and other factors, the additional exposure will only generate twice as many sales. Keep your eye attuned to situations like this to get the most from your advertising dollars.

LESSON 4

As Lesson 3 illustrates, sometimes your best advertising investment may actually cost you less money. When you are first starting out, whether you are running a home business or a business outside of your home, you need to be able to get people talking and thinking about your business.

If you are busy testing ads in media's such as the newspaper, magazines, radio, and television, you need to learn ways of promoting your business that do not require large cash expenditures. A few examples are:

· Word of Mouth · Business Cards · Press Releases · Non-Primetime Ads on Radio and Television

WORD OF MOUTH

This of course is the cheapest kind of advertising on the planet --- it does not cost you anything. Ask your customers if they know anyone who could also use your products or services. When they are happy with your offerings and service, they will be willing to tell you whom you can contact, and they will pass the word for you.

BUSINESS CARDS

You can usually pick up 500 business cards for about $20. When you do, hand them out. Do not give more than a couple of cards to each person. If they need more cards from you, they will ask.

Some people are known to network with others on a regular basis. Some of these people are also known to be always looking for an extra few bucks. With these people, you can suggest to them that if they write their name on the back of one of your business cards and the card is presented to you, then you will pay a referral fee to them. You do not have to offer much --- sometimes one dollar is enough. Look at your home business and your offerings and decide how much would be a good referral fee.

PRESS RELEASES

Press Releases are a good source for generating news about your home business. The business editor at your local newspaper is always on the lookout for a good business story to fill the business news section of the newspaper.

Of course, the business editor understands the economics of running a paper and is more inclined to run your story if you buy advertising in his/her publication, but will still print stories for special events and openings.

The important thing to remember about Press Releases is that it must be constructed in the form of a news story. Even if you are a sole proprietorship, quotes from you should be written in a third person format: John Doe said, "Your quote here."

A Press Release should pack the most important information at the beginning of the copy, and leave extra details towards the end.

You should always provide the reporter who gets the task a simple and easy way for him/her to contact you directly. Often the reporter will want to contact you to get details that will enhance their take on your story.

NON-PRIMETIME ADS ON RADIO AND TELEVISION

Believe it or not, some of the best rates for radio and television are on the overnight and non-primetime venues. These target times are not a total waste as they can easily keep the infomercial people in business.

These off-hours are just less populated than the primetime hours.

Don't be afraid to check your local radio and television rates for non-primetime hours to see what bargains may exist. With television, primetime is 7pm to 10pm. With radio, primetime is 8am to 5pm. This sure leaves a whole lot of hours available to advertise your home business at discount rates!

As a writer, I have had a client who is also a computer programmer. Lucky me! So, I traded him some articles for his web sites, and he has helped me build my site. I must admit, my profession has made it easier to trade my services. So, it depends on what you want to do with your business.

Join some blogs. Let other people know what your business entails, and put some feelers out. You may find someone who needs what you offer, and will gladly help you get the basics of your site ready for potential traffic.

If not, an excellent third option is also available: free online classes. For example, The Internet Business School offers free classes to individuals like you and I, who want to work from home. Do not forget that there can be dashes (-) between words as well if the phrase is too long. An example of that one might be game-show-hosts. Now that you have found a phrase that has some traffic or searches, you will want to see if it is registered. Any registrar, such as godaddy or 1and1 will give you that information. Let us move on to your next task.

2. Now you want to register the name that you have found. You can use the same registrar you used to research the name to register the same name. This can be very inexpensive. I have registered names for under 2 dollars for a whole year!

3. Now you are ready to park the domain. There are many good domain parking facilities. Your best bet will be to do a search for domain parking in order to find a good one. You will also want to choose at least three (3) keyword or phrases that will drive traffic to your new domain name. To do this, think about what people are looking for when they type in your domain name. Expand on that phrase or find a suitable synonym.

Once you have parked the name, you can read the tutorials from the domain parking service to see how you can help them to optimize the page that was created for your domain name. You can do several things to help drive traffic to the site, but these must fall within the terms of service of the site that is hosting your domain name.

Now, since you want to earn extra cash from home using this facility, you will want to make sure that you do nothing to violate the terms of service. Your free domain host will be driving traffic to your parked domain, and share the revenue with you. If you earn only 5 bucks a month from this site, you will have made a profit of $52.00 per year or over 650%. Now think of what would happen if you had 200 of those sites paying you 650% a year in profit? There are people who have hundreds of these domain names and this is how the earn extra cash from them.

If you have a product that needs launching--whether it’s an old one you are taking over or a new one--you can give it a proper send-off with the proper steps. Fast product launching need not be difficult, but it will require planning.

The first thing you will need to do is think ahead. You should make sure that you have press releases written, articles covered, photographs taken, etc., months in advance. Even if you have to change one or two small details on the information as the time approaches, you will have a lion’s share of the work already done.

You should also have some ideas lined up for continued advertising through blogs, forums, chat rooms, etc. Also have all your printed advertising and information packets ready to go a couple weeks ahead of time. Have a press kit ready and put the finishing touches on it a few days before your confirmed product launch. Fast product launching is often simply a matter of planning.

Also make sure you have a backup plan for all your promotions. If you have an appearance scheduled at a mall, for instance, be prepared with an alternate date in case your product misses its cue. Sometimes these tings happen through no fault of yours, and you should be ready.

Make sure that all different media are covered when you make your initial launch. If you want to start your own Internet-based home business but don’t have your own products, don’t want to earn petty affiliate commissions, and are sick and tired of network marketing, then choosing a “reseller” type of Internet business model may be what you’re looking for.

Sequential E-mail Autoresponder – If you don’t want to get tied down by doing routine follow-ups with prospects, the solution is to get a reliable autoresponder. If you don’t know what it is, a sequential autoresponder is a software program that will send pre-written email messages and pre-determined intervals to your prospects.

As the general rule of thumb, most people will need to see your message at least seven times to trust you and order from you. You can always hire a programmer to install an autoresponder script for you, but from my personal experience it’s better to outsource this function. Keeping up with regulations and side-stepping unpredictable email-blocking software by ISPs should be left to people who make a living doing just that. Advanced Shopping Cart – If you plan to sell multiple resell rights products, then you can go crazy just keeping track of everything. You’ll need an advanced shopping cart that not only allows you to manage your product inventory, but also allow you to create cross-selling and up-selling functions easily. If possible it should also give you advanced features like download page protection, coupon and discounting systems, automatic shipping calculator and other useful feature. Ad Tracking Software – To measure exactly which of your marketing campaigns turn to cash, you need an ad tracker. This should come with your shopping cart system or autoresponder or both. Complete Web Hosting – As your reseller business grows, you’ll find the growing need to use third-party software and custom programming, so make sure you have all the basic standards covered: PHP, CGI, Perl, MySQL and Apache. Ask your Web host if these are already provided in your account. If it’s not, you may want to consider getting a “reseller Web hosting” account and resell the extra bandwidth as well.

Understanding Resell Rights

When purchasing a resell rights product, make sure you understand exactly what type of license it provides. Here are the basic four levels of rights you can obtain:

Level 1 = Resell Rights - You obtain the right to sell the product yourself, but you cannot allow your customers to sell it. If your customers want to sell the same product they need to purchase their own rights from the original author or publisher.

Level 2 = Master Resell Rights - You obtain the right to sell the product yourself, and your immediate customers can sell it as well. This goes down only two levels, and your customer’s customer does not have the right to resell the product. They should buy the rights from you.

Level 3 = Generic Resell Rights - Anyone who owns the product can sell the product and also sell the resell rights to the product.

Level 4 = Customization Rights - Customize, re-brand, or repackage the product. There are many levels to how much customization can be made, some even offering to replace their name with yours.

Here’s an illustration that will make it clearer for you:

In the Level 1 rights, notice that the owner or publisher can choose to sell basic Resell Rights to anyone he chooses. The customers who bought them now become Resell Rights Holders, and they can in turn sell the product to any end customer they want.

In the Level 2 rights, if you buy a Master Resell Rights from the owner, you can sell the product to the end customer directly, or you can sell basic Resell Rights to another business owner who can sell it to the end customer. A Resell Rights holder cannot sell the rights to the product at all. In Level 2, a Master Resell Rights Holder cannot directly sell Master Resell Rights; only the owner or publisher of the product can do this.

In a Level 3 type of Generic Resell Rights, anyone who buys the product can resell both the product itself, and the resell rights included, to unlimited levels deep. In this scenario as long as you have bought the product, you are given the rights to resell it. Generic Resell Rights are usually inseparable from the product itself; you cannot sell the product and the rights as two different packages.

Who does the customer buy from? In the illustration above, you’ll note that the end customer can buy from:

1. The Owner / Publisher
   
2. The Resell Rights Owner
   
3. The Master Resell Rights Owner
   
4. The Generic Resell Rights Owner

By offering a Generic Resell Rights, however, the owner makes both basic Resell Rights and Master Resell Rights redundant. Beware of sites that want to sell you Master Resell Rights when the product itself already comes with Generic Resell Rights, since this makes no sense at all.

Does the product seller have resell rights? – Just because the owner of the Website claims that he does, it doesn’t mean that you should take his word. Check with the original publisher or author to determine if the seller owns the rights, and what type of rights he own.

Is the product compatible with your market? – If you focus on the golf market, buying the rights to an Internet marketing product will only spread your operations thinner and rob the overall Unique Selling Proposition of your business. Instead, focus only on buying the rights to related or complimentary products.

Are you selling the correct rights? – Based on the section above about types of resell rights, are you making the correct claim? For example, if you purchase master resell rights you can only sell basic resell rights to your customers. You cannot sell master resell rights yourself – only the original creator or publisher can do that.

Are the terms reasonable? – Some authors only allow you to sell their product as a standalone item, whereas others allow you to package or bundle it in any way you see fit. Some authors set a minimum selling price or standard selling price, others don’t. Read the terms to see if it’s reasonable before you buy the resell rights.

Do you have an inventory system? – Imagine if K-mart employees had to rely on their experience and instincts to tell you if a certain product is available and you get the picture. Keeping an inventory list of the name of the product, author, original selling price, recommended selling price, terms and conditions and other information will not only save loads of time, it will also help you sell better. Organize your collection into categories, sub-categories even as bundled packages. If you know how to sell affiliate products then you have an almost limited source of material to sell, and there is also no restriction on how much you can sell at any one time.

Affiliate products can be sold individually, from individual minisites, or in bulk from large affiliate showcase pages. Groups of similar products can be sold together, or you can feature a number of products that complement each other without providing the same information. Whatever method you use, the most important aspect of affiliate marketing is advertising.

You might argue that advertising is the most important part of any form of marketing, but with affiliate products the situation is different. You are advertising the product, but are not trying to sell it! That sounds a bit converse, but it is true. While you do the advertising, the merchant who owns the product does the actual selling.

Your advertising should be designed to send the prospect to the merchant’s sales page, and it is then the merchant that looks after the persuading, the taking of the order and the payment and also, you will be pleased to know, the handling of any complaints.

Many affiliates try to send the respondents to their adverts directly to the merchant’s website, but the most successful affiliate marketers have their own website. With your own website you are not restricted to pay-per-click campaigns, and you have to keep in mind that Google allow only one advert in their Adsense program for each search term (keyword) that is sent directly to the merchant’s domain.

You can send the respondents to your advert either to a squeeze page or a preselling page. On the squeeze page you first persuade the prospect to give you their name and email address, and then you can send them to the presales page. That is a page where you try to ‘presell’ the product by providing a positive review of it, or a list of testimonials, that convinces the prospect that the product does what it says it does. If that is your landing page, be sure to collect the name and address before you send them off to the merchant’s website.

How to Sell Affiliate Products Part II

It is criminal to allow a visitor to your website to leave without leaving their details so that you can keep in touch. You can do this by means of an opt-in form on the page or on an exit pop-up. Even better is to use both. Although many people don’t like pop-ups, the incontrovertible proven fact is that they work! What you must not do is provide a link to the product, then send the prospect from your presales page to a squeeze page. The likely result will be a lost visitor.

You must provide visitors with what you tell them they are getting. This is true in all forms of internet marketing: never have a button saying ‘Click here for more information’ then send them to a page saying ‘Leave your email address here’. Get the latter first, and then send them to the sales page for the product. The merchant will look after the rest, such as the product description, the all-important benefits and the free bonuses that go with the product.

There is no reason why you should not offer a free bonus for filling in the opt-in form. That’s fine, but once that has been done get them to the merchants page pronto. After all, that is what they are there for. You have advertised a product and they have made the click for more information on it. If you really want to increase your sales, buy the product yourself (or if you are lucky, persuade the merchant to give you a copy for review) and then review it.

Make your advert the offer of a free review of the best dongles, and then give 5 stars to the ones you are promoting as an affiliate. The link from there will be to the merchant’s site. Not directly from the Adwords or Yahoo S.M. advert, but from your own web page that has been designed to provide some information on the product prior to the main sales pitch.

That is how to sell affiliate products. Advertise, opt-in form, review or write-up then straight to the merchant’s site. You then concentrate on the next products you want to add to your portfolio while the merchant’s do the hard work.

“Did you know that it's ok to have and make money... Online?”

This week, I'm going to provide you with some excellent online business tips that will help any business, and also I’ll tell you a story about an e-mail that I received this week.

Firstly, on New Year's Eve I met a friend of a friend... We were allowed by our respective partners to talk business for an hour over dinner! In all seriousness, we'd spoken before, but this was the first time that we'd met in person so we had our excuses...

Anyway, he has a similar background to myself - he's a normal person just like you and me... But, he decided one day that the office and a 9-5 job just wasn't what he wanted to do for the rest of his working life. The result of this decision was that he refinanced his house and set-up his very own landscape gardening business in his local area.

He told me that one day it just hit him - out of the blue. He realised that he only had one shot at this life and he hated what he was doing at the time... and he wanted to make more money… And I could certainly relate to that!

His business has been going for over one year now, but he did confess that 2006 was going to be a make or break year for him in terms of purely finance... And as we talked more it became obvious to me that for the immediate future he needed to target very specific 'contracts' that would bring his business a residual income for the entire year or perhaps longer.

In the past, he'd been dropping a simple leaflet through doors, or letters to the bigger clients - and we talked about what the leaflets and letters contained. They were good in content, but I suggested that he needed to stand out from his competition by offering something in addition to the service that everyone was offering. i.e. to maintain your garden for £x every month.

So, with my internet marketing hat firmly on and in place, I suggested that he offer something free - as an additional bonus for winning the contract. Something that would encourage the potential client to become a paying client... (A sound Internet Marketing and Online Business development strategy)...

I told him that he needed to focus on his customer - what do they want from a landscape gardener? What are they really looking for? It's not primarily cost, but something to make you stand out from the competition.

He told me that potential clients were often unsure as to the quality of the job or whether gardeners could be trusted. Well, this was it... this was the 'clincher' that I was looking for...

He's since added a few testimonial quotes to his sales letter and is now offering a 'first month free' service to all maintenance contracts signed in January. Of course, he's adjusted the price to accommodate this free month, but the importance is winning the contract in the first place... And I understand from speaking to him this week that he's already arranged two meetings with potential clients for next week.

You see, marketing and sales is all about knowing what your market wants. If you can offer them what they want at a reasonable price and make yourself stand out from the competition, then you'll be successful. To target your market, you can then use leaflets, direct mail, internet marketing, e-mail marketing or even a telephone call.

My Online Business tip for this week is, therefore, to get inside the head of your customer and then ask yourself (as the customer) “what do I really want?” Once you master this, the rest will be simple.

Moving on...

I received an e-mail that upset me this week - it was from someone that isn't a customer of mine questioning how to set-up an online business. I always try to help everyone that I come into contact with, so I responded to a series of questions from this person in an attempt to help them get started... The response to my final e-mail amazed me!

It read something along the lines of “it's alright for you - you do this for a living”...

Well, what do you say to that?!

Believe it or not, I wasn't born with my home-based online business in a box - ready to open and start making money whenever I felt like it. There was a time when I knew nothing about the internet, nothing about marketing techniques and even general business knowledge let alone an online business!

So to say something so defeatist just amazed me. To me, it's like saying that becoming a self-made millionaire just isn't possible...

Sure, people have done it, but that doesn't mean that I can do it?!!

So much of where you are and what you do is in your mind, which is why I want to make the following statement regarding the rich and successful amongst us:

Everyone has the right to become wealthy and experience financial freedom. Those that do… believe that “it's ok to make and have money...”

And if you think about this statement for just a moment and consider all the negativity associated with having or making money, then it becomes very clear as to what this means.

At a young age, we're taught that “money is the root of all evil” and “money can't buy you love/friends”. We also see our parents using credit and spending everything they have, so we copy them...

My parents retired BEFORE they'd paid off their mortgage, so not only did I have absolutely no advantages than the 'normal' person... I saw that working all your life was NOT the way to go.

If you take only this from this online business message, it should be that any business can be improved with the correct and most cost-effective marketing. And in order to succeed you need to start thinking like the rich - it's ok to make money... and lots of money at that.
