MLM Meets Internet Marketing = 1,732 New Recruits in 1 Month!

by Bill Young

Multi Level Marketing, or MLM is really an oxymoron.

Virtually no one "markets" anything, especially the distributors, in MLM or network marketing, as some call it.

Instead, they frantically run after strangers in the streets, stick flyers under car windshields in the mall (I am ashamed to say I did that before learning better), and harangue unsuspecting relatives with "Business Opportunities" they could care less about.

Are these tactics successful? No, 95% of people going into MLM never make a full-time income. This does not make MLM bad; the insurance industry has similarly dismal figures.

After the eager beavers ravage their warm market, friends, relatives, co-workers, etc., they spend their money buying nearly worthless "Opportunity Seeker" leads, "Fresh," "Exclusive," "Local," costing as much as $5 each.

After spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on leads and advertising per month and making hundreds of phone calls, the vast majority of distributors are broke and give up.

What do they have to show for their career in network marketing? The average distributor recruits only 2.5 people and then quits, his total sojourn as a network marketer having lasted 3-6 months.

Marketing, on the other hand, is the positioning of your product as the solution to the problems of a target market. The target market is a population of people who want or need your product, have bought it before, preferably, and/or have a current need for it.

This target market must also be accessible at reasonable cost and have the money to pay for your product.

Picture someone with golf clubs to sell. Do you think they would do better trying to button hole everyone who rushes by in Grand Central Station in New York at rush hour (Everyone should experience Grand Central at rush hour before they die!) or sponsoring a table at a golf outing? Duh!

Would you rather go fishing in the ocean or in a lake stocked with trout?

You get the picture.

The irony is that Internet marketing is cheap: emails, autoresponders, websites, etc. It can also be effective, very effective.

Not only that, Internet marketing is duplicatable. You can teach your down line to follow the procedures taught by successful Internet marketers and they will be successful too.

You can reach thousands of potential prospects in a flash for little or no money.

Target markets are easy to find. Just Google golfers or whomever you are targeting and visit their online forums or chat rooms.

Once you reach them, offer them some helpful information that will help them solve a pressing problem, one that your research had found that is unique for the group. Give it for free. You must give before you get.

Once they see you are offering helpful information and not trying to cram something down their throats, they will be amenable to listening to you.

So, you want to sell fly fishing rods? Find an Internet forum for fly fishing enthusiasts. Contribute information about the eating and behavior habits of brook trout; the types of lake bottoms they prefer, the water temperature, still water vs. fast moving water, etc. How did you become such an instant expert? Google!

This type of information is always useful and eagerly sought after by enthusiasts, especially by beginners, who make up the largest numbers of any such group.

When anyone requests the information, they have to give you their contact information. Use this info to send them more helpful information periodically.

Attach a link to your fly fishing rod website at the bottom of the second and subsequent messages.

This is Internet marketing.

One example I use in my MLM seminars is that of Tom Bell and Tim Erway. They were experienced Internet marketers. They were persuaded by a good friend to give network marketing a try.

They did.

Applying true marketing techniques to MLM, they were able to recruit 1,732 new distributors in 1 month, each with a sign-up fee of $100!

In a 5-month period, they made $11,000,000 and garnered 20,000 leads, for free.

Maybe you ought to give Internet marketing a try if you want to be successful in MLM.
